The presidential campaign of former Vice President and PDP flagbearer, Atiku Abubakar, received a further boost at the weekend with a special endorsement from the kinsmen of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, during the National Convention of Owu descendants Union held in Iwo Town, Osun State.
Many royal fathers and leaders of thought in Owu Kingdom who assembled at the socio-cultural summit, declared their support for the former Vice President, after Chief Obasanjo, the Balogun of Owuland, had goaded them through a motivating speech laced with idioms and proverbs linked to patriotism and statesmanship.
“It is a pity that Nigeria is the butt of jokes as the headquarters of extreme poverty in the world. We have no reason to be this down. Bad leadership is responsible for our current state of affairs. We cannot therefore allow incompetent people to pin our collective interests down forever. Hence, we must vote rightly to bring in good leaders that will turn things around for the better,” Obasanjo advised, in his remarks at the Convention.
In his own response through a representative, Otunba Oyewole Fasawe, Atiku extolled the virtues of courage and bravery often associated with Owu people, particularly in the spheres of community development and nation building.
“Without a doubt, the descendants of Owu all over the country are naturally inclined towards patriotism, selflessness and Spartan discipline.
“My tutelage under ex President Obasanjo was an eye-opener and apt attestation to the courage of the great people from his lineage” Atiku stated, while urging the teeming population of Owu people in many parts of Yorubaland to cast their votes for him next year, to change Nigeria from poverty to prosperity.
In appreciation, Otunba Fasawe donated the sum of N2.5m to the coffers of the Association on behalf of his bosom friend, Atiku Abubakar, the Waziri of Adamawa.
