Former President Olusegun Obasanjo is conspicuously absent as the National Council of State meeting gets underway at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
In attendance are former Heads of State Generals Yakubu , Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar.
Also present are former President Shehu Shagari, former Head of Interim Government Earnest Shonekan and State Governors.
President Goodluck Jonathan presides over the National Council of State that comprises of all former Heads of State, Senate President, Chief Justice of Nigeria and the 36 State Governors as well as FCT Minister.
The chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Attahiru Jega, is expected to brief the Council on the preparations made so far for the general elections.
It was gathered that the Council may advice the President on whether the elections should go ahead as scheduled or be postponed.
Prompt News reports that there have been agitations by different groups including 16 political parties calling for the postponement of the elections slated for February 14th and 28th.
However, the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) is insisting that the elections should go ahead as scheduled.
