NYSC members on parade
The National Youth Service Corps ((NYSC) said on Wednesday that it would step up monitoring of serving corps members to reduce cases of rejection due to poor attitude to work.
Kaduna State Coordinator of the scheme, Mr Dahunsi Mohammed said in a paper he presented at a workshop on NYSC/Corps Employers Relations, held in Kaduna.
According to him, the measure is part of steps necessary to reduce the level of rejection of corps members.
He also called for strict compliance to the NYSC procedures on postings, adding that “as long as posting are done without strict compliance with corps employers request, the challenge of corps rejection will persist.”
Mohammed also noted that there are “too many corps graduates of arts and humanities chasing fewer placement for primary assignment which automatically leads to rejection.”
He said that the NYSC has devised strategies to check sharp practices among corps members, including scheduled and unscheduled inspections of the corps members and field inspectors.
Earlier, the Director General of the scheme, Brig.-Gen Suleiman Kazaure said the event involving stakeholders was to strengthen mutual understanding for effective engagement of corps members.
“The corps employers’ workshop is not only to appreciate the enduring partnership between the scheme and the employers but to also identify challenges in corps administration and proffer solutions.”
According to him, the theme was conceptualized to help the forum draw from the experiences of corps employers in ensuring effective utilisation of corps manpower.
Also speaking, the Kaduna State Commissioner for Youths, Sports and Culture, Daniel Danauta thanked the NYSC for reviving the interactive session with the view to addressing the challenges.
Represented by the Director, Youth and Culture, Emmanuel Akut, the commissioner said the state government has warned its ministries and agencies against rejection of corps members.
“We have also adopted a policy in the ministry that if any corps member is rejected, let him or her come over to the ministry, we will accept them.”
