The Sokoto State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) has intercepted 46 bales of treated mosquito nets donated to the state, being smuggled to Niger Republic.
The mosquito nets were donated by USAID for free distribution to the people of Sokoto state as part of malaria prevention project.
Mr Bello Argungu, the NSCDC Commandant in the state told newsmen on Friday in Sokoto that the smugglers bolted on sighting NSCDC personnel along Nigeria-Niger border.
“Our tactical team of patrol sighted the bad elements and approached their hide out.
“On sighting the personnel all the suspects bolted living the bales of the treated mosquito nets which are presented here today.
“However, investigation is on going to ensure the perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted accordingly,” he said.
Meanwhile, Argungu said the command has arrested seven suspected criminals terrorising residents of Sokoto.
He said among them was one who allegedly attempted to rape a two-year-old girl.
