The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Monday officially released the Consumer Price Index (CPI) report for August 2025, which reflects developments in Nigeria’s inflationary trends.
According to the latest data, the year-on-year headline inflation rate for August 2025 eased to 20.12%, a decline of 1.76 percentage points from the 21.88% recorded in July 2025.
This decline indicates a relative slowdown in the pace of price increases across key sectors of the economy, and it marks the third consecutive month of moderation in the headline inflation rate, highlighting gradual improvement in overall price stability.
On a month-on-month basis, the headline inflation rate stood at 0.74% in August 2025. This represents the rate of change in the average price level between July and August 2025.
Although prices are still rising, the slower pace of increase suggests that inflationary pressures are beginning to ease.
However, the food inflation rate remains a concern. On a month-on-month basis, food inflation stood at 1.65% in August 2025, driven by rising costs in key staples such as grains, vegetables, and meat products.
Persistent pressures in the food segment continue to reflect supply chain constraints, seasonal demand, and logistics challenges across various parts of the country.
The NBS said it will continue to monitor these developments closely and remains committed to providing accurate, timely, and transparent data to support evidence-based policymaking.
“We recognize the impact of inflation on households and businesses and emphasize the importance of coordinated efforts among stakeholders including fiscal and monetary authorities to address both structural and short-term drivers of inflation.
“We encourage analysts, policymakers, the media, and the general public to refer to the full CPI report available on the official NBS website for more comprehensive insights into the sectoral breakdowns and regional inflation trends”, the NBS said.
