The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has dismissed with a wave of the hand the rumours that former Sweden senior men’s football team head coach, Janne Andersson has been appointed as the new coach of the Super Eagles.
Rumours were rife in the media last weekend that the federation has appointed the Swedish gaffer as the replacement of Finidi George who resigned from the top post two months ago after just four matches incharge including two African Cup of Nations (AFCON) games.
But Prompt News has exclusively gathered that NFF has neither appointed Andersson nor anyone else for that matter to take charge of the Super Eagles which has not had a stable manager since former coach Jose Peseiro resigned after the 2023 AFCON in Cotè d Ivoire early this year.
An NFF chieftain (names withheld) has disclosed that the federation is working towards naming a substantive manager for Super Eagles and whenever such decision is made the NFF Communications Department will announce it to the public.
According to the chieftain any report of the federation appointing a new head coach for the Super Eagles which did not emanate from the NFF Communications Department should not be taken serious.
“Please, I have told you whenever you see any news about NFF that was not released officially by NFF Communications Department, please don’t take it serious. At least, you know that NFF have official communication channels and if an important announcement is to be made, the NFF Communications Department will release it. We have not appointed anyone yet. This is the true position”, the NFF chieftain told our reporter.
Meanwhile, a source in Sweden who said that Andersson is one of the country’s top coaches has explained that the experienced manager who failed to qualify his country to the 2022 World Cup and was then fired in November 2023 after he failed to qualify them to the 2024 Euro was contacted by the Nigerian authorities sometime ago but the Swede turned the offer down.
As at the time of filing this report it was not clear when the NFF will finally name a coach for Super Eagles.
