The Anti-Touting And Ethics Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ibadan branch, on Tuesday embarked on moves to sanitize law practice in the area.
Under the measure, the committee is raiding those engaged in illegal law practice, ambulance chasing, touting and unlawful preparation of legal documents.
The News Agency of Nigeria {NAN} reports that among the areas raided in Ibadan metropolis were the Iyaganku, Mapo, Gate and Iwo road courts and no fewer than 27 suspects were arrested by the committee and police.
The raid was led by NBA Ibadan’s Chairman, Mrs Folasade Aladeniyi, Secretary, Mr Olakunle Akintola, the Anti touting Committee chairman, Mr. Segun Popoola, among others.
Among those caught by the Anti touting committee were road-side typists doing land agreements and preparing other legal documents meant solely for lawyers to handle.
Lawyers who are violating the ethics of the legal profession and touting at the Criminal registry of Courts, and fake lawyers were also arrested.
According to the Secretary, Mr Akintola, the move followed attempts to sanitize the legal profession and regulate conduct of lawyers and ensure that non-lawyers refrain from engaging in illegal law practice.
Mr. Akintola stated further that the core mandate of the Anti-touting Committee is the maintenance of law and order in the practice of law, waging war against all forms of touting, ambulance chasing, illegal practice of law, impersonation and illegal representation in courts.
“The suspects have been taken to the police station, their profiles taken and they will be charged to court in due process,” he said.
Akintola also used the medium to call on the public to only engage qualified lawyers, especially for preparation of legal documents and not quacks. {NAN}. READ ALSO:
