Nasarawa government and the state chapter of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), on Monday, began negotiations on implementation of the new minimum wage and payment of promotion arrears to civil servants.
Speaking at a meeting with labour leaders in Lafia, the Deputy Governor, Dr Emmanuel Akabe, expressed state government’s readiness to commence payment of minimum wage for civil servants on grade levels 1 to 6.
Akabe said that negotiation was ongoing on consequential adjustment for other categories of workers in the state.
The deputy governor also said that government was committed to the payment of the remaining 2016 arrears to the workers.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting, which was at the instance of Governor Abdullahi Sule, also discussed the financial position of the state.
Akabe, while commending the labour leaders for the harmonious relationship between government and workers, however, noted that paucity of fund had hindered government from executing some projects and called for understanding.
In their remarks, Chairman, Joint Negotiation Council (JNC), Shawulu Tammah, and his labour counterpart, Yusuf Iya, appealed to the state government to commence the implementation of promotions for civil servants immediately.
On his part, Chairman, Trade Union Congress, Mohammed Doma, urged the government to consider the issue of consequential adjustment to enable workers benefit from the minimum wage. (NAN)
