Nasarawa State House of Assembly has passed into second reading, a bill for a Law to Prohibit Forceful Entry and Illegal Occupation of Landed Properties in the state.
The bill also seek to prohibit Violent and Fraudulent Conducts in Relation to Landed Properties in Nasarawa State and Other Matters connected thereto.
Mr Danladi Jatau, speaker of the Assembly announced the passage of the bill into second reading after its sponsor, Alh. Ibrahim Nana, (Keffi West) presented the substance of the bill during plenary on Tuesday in Lafia.
Jatau commended the sponsor of the bill and members for their positive contributions.
He said that the menace of land grabbers had led to conflicts with resultant loss of lives and destruction of properties in the state.
The speaker said that increasing cases of land grabbing had become a great concern to the assembly, hence the need to prioritise the bill.
He said that the bill, if passed into law, would address the activities of land grabbers thereby promoting peace and security in the state.
“I will commit this bill to the House Committee on Land and Survey to work on and report back to the House on Oct. 15, 2024” the Speaker said.
Earlier, the sponsor of the bill, Nana, said it was aimed at addressing all issues surrounding illegal sales and occupation of landed properties in the state.
He said that the activities of land grabbers were becoming worrisome in the state, particularly in Karu Local Government Area.
“The issue of land grabbing has been a persistent challenge in various parts of our state, especially Karu LGA, causing unrest and conflicts among challenges.
“This bill seek to end land grabbing, promote peace, security and save resources in the state,” he said.
Nana urged the lawmakers to support the bill to pass second reading.
The lawmakers unanimously supported the passage of the bill into second reading after deliberations.
They all lamented on how activities of land grabbers and speculation had negatively affected the peace of the state.
They also called for drastic action against offenders and emphasised the need for the courts to expedite action in land cases.( NAN).
