LONDON – From Omobolaji Oyegunle Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho has promised Manchester City fans that his best is yet to come.
The 19-year-old striker has managed a seamless progression from the youth team to the first team at the Etihad Stadium this season, notching 13 goals in 33 games.
Only Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne have hit the back of the net on more occasions for City this term and the Nigerian star has vowed to keep working hard to improve on the pitch.
He told Sky Sports: “My record is not bad, this season has been great for me and for the team as well.
“I’ve been getting goals in the team and helping them.
“It’s not bad this season but I’ve got to keep working hard. This is not going to be the best season ever, I ‘m just starting and there will be more good to come, l’ll just keep working hard and working on everything in training and in games and l’ll get there. ”
Iheanacho admits his rise to fame in such a short space of time has come as a surprise and while he feels like one of the regular first team squad now, he is determined not to let complacency creep into his game.
He added: “l was hoping to play a first team game and be among them one day, l had ideas about that so l was hoping l would join them some day.
“It was a surprise for me when they said l was part of the team so l was happy and i’m pleased to join them.
“Now I’m convinced I’m part of the squad but it will not get into my head, l will just keep working hard and keep believing in myself. I will help the team anyway I can this season”.
Iheanacho has hit four goals in his last two Premier League games for City.
The teenager netted his 12th and 13th strikes in last week’s 4-2 defeat at Southampton, a week before he hit a brace in City’s comfortable 4-0 win over Stoke.
But the star was left on the bench for City’s two-legged Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid.
While he came on as a sub during both games, he failed to make a significant impact and the Citizens crashed out 1-0 on aggregate to a Fernando own goal.
