Two airplane passengers are facing a 25,000-euro (30,400-dollar) fine each for allegedly refusing to wear masks as required during their flight, German police said on Friday.
The two men, Russian nationals aged 35 and 40, had flown to Frankfurt from Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, a statement from federal police at the German airport said.
They were accused of refusing to wear mask on board while also disobeying the instructions given by the flight crew.
The pilot notified the German federal police, who detained the men after they landed.
Each had to pay a security deposit of 500 euros before being allowed to continue their homeward journey to Moscow, the statement said.
A spokesman said the fines are so high because the allegations regard violations of air safety legislation rather than everyday violations of Coronavirus rules.(dpa/NAN)
