Police in Ogun State have detained a man suspected to be mentally unstable after he allegedly vandalised the Agemo statue located at Itoro Roundabout in Ijebu Ode.
The incident occurred on Saturday and was confirmed in a statement issued Sunday by the state police spokesperson, CSP Omolola Odutola, in Abeokuta.
The Agemo deity is revered in Ijebu land as a supreme spiritual figure. According to Odutola, the suspect damaged the statue by removing its crown, an act considered a desecration of the shrine.
The severed crown was later recovered and is currently secured at the Obalende Police Station in Ijebu Ode.
Odutola said the timely response of officers at the scene prevented potential unrest among traditional worshippers in the area.
“The suspect is currently undergoing psychological assessment, as preliminary signs point to mental instability,” she stated.
She added that the situation in Ijebu Ode remains peaceful, and assured the public of their safety as investigations continue.
