A 35-year-old man, Emeka Nwogu, has alleged that his 25-year-old girlfriend masterminded an attack against him by cultists, leading to the loss of N15.5 million and other valuables, including three mobile phones.
Prompt News reports that the incident occurred the day after Valentine’s Day at Ago Palace Way, Lagos.
According to Nwogu, after spending the night at a hotel with his girlfriend, they went out to eat the next day.
He recounted that while they were at a restaurant, she insisted on returning to the hotel to use the restroom.
On their way back, however, she led him past their original stop, assuring him not to worry.
Upon alighting at another bus stop, a group of armed men attacked and dragged them to a secluded area where he was tortured with guns and axes.
The attackers stole his phones and forced him to reveal passwords to his cryptocurrency accounts, draining approximately $9,700.
Nwogu and his girlfriend reported the attack at Ago Palace Police Station.
However, a security guard who witnessed the incident identified one of the attackers as someone frequently seen with the woman.
She was arrested and, under interrogation, confessed to planning the attack with her younger brother and his associates after discovering her boyfriend’s messages with other women.
The case was transferred to the Commissioner of Police Special Squad 1. Investigations led to the arrest of four suspects—Ogbuka Tochukwu (22), John Wisdom (25), Odora Michael (24), and Babatunde Ibrahim (20)—all of whom confessed to being members of the Aiye confraternity.
Recovered items included a locally made gun, four cartridges, a battle axe, and N7.5 million in cash.
The woman’s father returned N3 million, claiming it was part of the N5 million kept aside as her share. Her brother remains at large.
Nwogu said he was traumatized by the betrayal.
“I never imagined my girlfriend of four years could do this.
I appreciate the efforts of the police in resolving this case.”
The same Special Squad had previously dismantled a notorious kidnapping gang in Lagos last year.
