A Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday, sentenced a 40-year-old man, Mutawakilu Dasuki, to seven years in the correctional service over drug trafficking.
The defendant was arraigned on a four-count charge bordering on illegal transportation and deal in cannabis sativa and codeine syrup.
He pleaded guilty to the charges before Justice Tijani Ringim.
After his plea, the Prosecutor, Mrs N. J. Mamza, reviewed the facts of the case before the court and tendered several exhibits through an Exhibit Keeper of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mr Ododo Lawrence.
Some of these included a statement of the convict, a request for scientific aid form, a drug analysis form as well as remnant of the narcotics.
The court admitted the exhibits in evidence.
The prosecutor then urged the court to convict and sentence the defendant based on the evidence adduced by prosecution as well as the plea of the defendant.
In his judgement, Justice Ringim convicted the defendant and sentenced him to a term of three years imprisonment each on counts one and two with an option of fine of N300,000.
The court sentenced the defendant to a term of two years imprisonment on counts three and four.
The judge held that the terms of imprisonment on counts one and two are to run concurrently while counts three and four are to run consecutively.
According to the charge, the convict committed the offence on Oct. 20, 2022 at the Agege area of Lagos.
He was said to have engaged in the transportation and unlawful deal in 4kg of Cannabis sativa as well as 1.7 litres of Codeine syrup.
The offences contravene the provisions of Sections 11(b) and 11(c) of the NDLEA Act Cap N30 Law of the Federation 2004. (NAN)
