Gov Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, on Monday, inaugurated the newly-elected chairmen of 32 local government councils in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that election into the only remaining local government, Ido, was rescheduled for May 29, following discovery that the logo of Zenith Labour Party was missing on the ballot papers for the council area.

Makinde, during the inauguration held at the House of Chiefs, State Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan, urged the council chairmen to prioritise policies and programme that would fast track development in their respective local government areas.

He stressed that such programmes and policies must be ones that would have positive impact on the socio-economic wellbeing of the people at the grassroots.

The governor, who urged them to replicate the good works being undertaken by his administration at the state level, said that their election had given them the opportunity to deliver good governance to the people of the state.

“We cannot over-emphasise governance at the grassroots. The people of Oyo State must feel your presence by way of development and good governance.

“Just as they are holding me accountable, they will also hold you accountable,” he stated.

The governor described the election that produced the council chairmen as free, fair, credible and in line with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

While congratulating the elected chairmen, their deputies and councillors, Makinde also commended the people of the state for successfully electing their representatives at the grassroots.

Speaking with newsmen on behalf of others, Chairman of Ibadan North-West Local Government Council, Mr Rahman Adepoju, promised that they would replicate the good works being done by the Makinde-led administration at the council level.

Adepoju assured the people of the state that they would bring dividends of democracy to all the nooks and crannies of the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the state Chief Judge, Justice Muntha Abimbola, administered Oath of Allegiance and Oath of Office on the new council chairmen. (NAN)
