The Jigawa State Agency for Mass Education (AME), has presented certificates to 107 women adult learners of its mass literacy programme.
The News of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the graduates completed basic and post-basic literacy programme.
The programme is being implemented in collaboration between the agency and the Federal University Dutse (FUD), Centre for Gender Studies.
Also, the Jigawa government in 2021 introduced the literacy by radio programme for adult learners to boost the state’s literacy level.
Speaking at the ceremony in Dutse on Thursday, Dr Abbas Abubakar, the Executive Secretary of the agency, said the beneficiaries participated in the programme at Kawaye and Bakin Jeji communities of Dutse Local Government Area of the state.
He said that 51 learners completed basic classes while 56 others completed post-basic classes.
Abubakar said the state government provided learning materials such as learners’ primers to each of the beneficiaries.
“The National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-formal Education (NMEC), also supported the programme with instructional materials to boost mass literacy in the state,” he said.
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Sabo Abdulkarim, expressed joy over the level of comprehension of the women adult learners.
Represented by Prof. Nura Muhammad, DVC Academics, Abdulkarim said the gesture was part of the university’s community service to its immediate host communities.
“I have no words to express my happiness for the level of educational development I’ve seen today.
“These women could neither read nor write before the establishment of this study centre in collaborative effort by the university and agency for mass education.
“These are communities that are very close to the university and we felt the need to contribute to their development. Now, they are able to read and write and also willing to continue to the next level,” he said.
He assured that the beneficiaries would be admitted to the university to further their education once they acquire the basic requirements for admission.
Also speaking, Dr Fatima Adhama, the Director, Centre For Gender Studies of the University, applauded the women for acquiring basic and post basic education in spite of challenges.
“You’ve really done well and made us proud despite being mothers, you made sure that you achieved this.
“We hope that you will continue until you join the university and other high institutions to advance your education,” she said.
Dr John Ede, the NMEC’s Director of Literacy, described Jigawa as second to Lagos in the development of adult literacy in the country, and urged the beneficiaries to maintain the tempo until they reach to the highest level.
“We rank Jigawa as one of the best agencies that are doing well in mass literacy. When you mention Lagos, then you mention Jigawa, and that was why NMEC honoured it in 2022”.
Some of the women, Rashid Bayero and Aisha Ibrahim, commended the gesture and advocated
for vocational skills training to enable them to become self-reliant. (NAN). READ ALSO:
