Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, has condemned the recent actions of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, describing them as an “embarrassing display” following the disruption at the Assembly complex on Thursday.
Reports indicate that Obasa, accompanied by his security personnel, entered the Speaker’s office without authorization and later held a session with only four lawmakers, despite an ongoing legal battle over his removal.
Speaking after a court hearing at the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja on Friday, Meranda emphasized that the matter was now in court and urged all parties to allow their legal teams to handle the case.
“This is just the beginning of the legal process. Both sides have their legal representatives, and we should let them do their job,” she stated.
Addressing Obasa’s presence at the Assembly complex, Meranda acknowledged his right to be there as a member but criticized his decision to force his way into her office.
“He is still a member of the House, so he can visit, but breaking into my office is completely unacceptable,” she said.
She dismissed Obasa’s attempt to hold a parliamentary session with only a few lawmakers, calling it a mere spectacle.
“A quorum is needed for legislative proceedings. Sitting with just three or four members does not amount to a legitimate sitting,” she remarked.
Meranda also revealed that although some of her security personnel had been reinstated, the level of protection was significantly reduced.
“My usual security detail includes 12 police officers, four DSS operatives, and two anti-bomb units. Today, I have only three or four policemen,” she noted.
The Assembly’s spokesperson, Olukayode Ogundipe, also reacted after the court session, calling the incident a “shameful scene.”
“We all saw what happened—it was disgraceful. Even in court, his lawyers were more focused on drama than the case itself. But when we get to the bridge, we will cross it,” Ogundipe said.
He further affirmed that Meranda enjoys the backing of the majority in the Assembly, stating that 35 lawmakers stand firmly in support of her leadership.
