Christ Mitots School, located in the Ikorodu area of Lagos, has indefinitely suspended a teacher, Stella Nwadigo, after she was filmed assaulting a three-year-old pupil, Abayomi Michael, during a numeracy lesson.
The shocking video, which circulated on social media, shows Nwadigo aggressively smacking the young child for struggling with the lesson. The footage prompted public outrage and led to the teacher’s arrest on Wednesday.
In a statement, the school management strongly condemned the teacher’s actions, calling them “unacceptable.”
The school assured the public that Nwadigo would remain suspended until the ongoing investigation is completed.
“We are aware of a deeply disturbing incident involving one of our teachers and a student, which has been circulating on social media,” the statement said. “The video depicts a teacher physically disciplining a student in a manner that is completely unacceptable and in direct violation of the values and principles of our institution.”
The management emphasized that the school is committed to maintaining a culture of respect, care, and dignity, expressing horror over the incident. “Such actions will not be tolerated,” the statement read.
To address the situation, the school has suspended the teacher indefinitely while a thorough investigation takes place.
“This swift and decisive action is in line with our zero-tolerance policy toward misconduct and our responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of all students under our care,” the statement continued.
As part of its response, the school is planning mandatory training sessions for teachers on child protection protocols, positive disciplinary practices, and improving sensitivity in interactions with students.
Additionally, the management has introduced a “confidential whistle-blowing system” to encourage the reporting of inappropriate behavior promptly.
