By Victoria Hanson Lagos state Assembly has called on the State Governor, Mr Akinkunmi Ambode to direct the Ministry of Information and other relevant agencies to enlighten the public concerning the behavioural implication of strange foreign practices on the youth and to also encourage the practice of the Nigerian culture.
The lawmakers who made the call on Tuesday at the plenary directed that the state films and video censors Board must ensure adequate content control of films, videos and musical lyrics in the state.
Speaking on the issue, Hon. Adefunmilayo Tejusho said that she was aware of a planned series programmes to be aired by the True Life Chapter (TLC) channel on the Digital Satellite Television( DSTV) platform ” I am jazz a story of transgender teenager with a view to promoting gender immorality in the society “she said
She noted that she is particularly concerned about the perceived silence of the Federal Government Authorities about the state if uninhibited displays of obscenities and uncensored programmes on the Nigerian airwaves as evident in musical videos, films and other airings on National Television especially the state Television Network.
” If the planned transgender programmes aired on the Digital Satellite Television (DSTV )platform is not statutorily checked before it goes out to the public for viewing, it will not only corrupt the Nigerian Youth but capable of luring them into sexual vices contrary to the Nigerian laws which she said forbids homosexuality and sexual pervasion in the society.” Tejusho stressed.
She however hinted that there is need for both state and federal government to protect the sanctity of the Nigerian airwaves through the establishment and enforcement of the censor Boards and the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission to prevent contents that are offensive to under aged viewers and audience.
In a related development, the assembly has unanimously called on the National Assembly to amend some sections of standards organization of Nigerian Act No18, 1990 with a view to recommending stiffer penalties for contraventions.
