Declaring the hearing open in Birnin Kebbi on Tuesday, the Speaker of the assembly, Alhaji Muhammad Usman-Zuru, said unfettered access to electricity was no longer a luxury but a necessity for life.
He explained that the bill underscored collective efforts towards improving infrastructure and service delivery, particularly in critical area of electricity.
”The Bill is in response to growing need for reliable, affordable and sustainable power, essential for development of all sectors of the economy.
“It reflects commitment to creating a legal framework that will promote electricity generation, distribution and regulation, while fostering private sector participation and investment.
”Access to electricity is no longer a luxury but a necessity, it fuels industry, powers education, drives innovation and improves the quality of life of our people.
”Yet, in spite of government’s best efforts, many communities in the state still face persistent challenges in relation to power supply, which is affecting their productivity and economic opportunities,” Usman-Zuru said.
The bill, he added, would address such challenges by ensuring the provision of stable, modern and efficient electricity network in the state.
”It outlines the roles of government’s agencies, private partners and regulatory bodies, in ensuring that the electricity sector is properly managed, thereby creating a platform to satisfy the growing future demand of our population.
”The assembly is determined to craft and approve the Law to reflect the aspirations of the people and address real issues on ground,” Usman-Zuru said.
He affirmed the resolve of the house to approving the bill that would lead to transformative changes towards enhancing access to electricity, promoting economic growth and uplifting the living standard of the people in the state.
On his part, the Chairman of the committee, Alhaji Faruq Mai-Sudan, (APC-Suru), said the committee would seek input from critical stakeholders in the energy sector, civil society organisations and the public, prelude to the passage of the bill. (NAN).
