A shocking discovery was made in Tudun Tagarji, Kano State, on Saturday when a newborn baby was found dead inside a carton near a drainage in the Kaura area.
The unsettling incident was reported by Commander Rabiu Sulaiman, leader of the Operation Zaman Lafiya vigilante group, who shared the details in a statement on Sunday.
Sulaiman and his team came across the carton during a routine patrol at around 2 a.m. He explained, “While we were patrolling, we noticed a suspicious carton by a pit. Initially, we couldn’t tell what was inside, so I instructed my team to check, and to our horror, we found a dead baby inside.”
Upon making the grim discovery, the vigilante group immediately alerted community leaders and reported the case to the police.
They also involved the ward head and other local members of the community before taking the baby to the police station.
The authorities directed them to a hospital, where medical professionals confirmed the infant was deceased.
The baby was then given a proper burial in line with Islamic rites, as Sulaiman explained, “We organized the burial according to our traditions.”
Sulaiman used the incident as a reminder to other vigilante groups to stay alert in protecting their communities and urged parents, especially those with young daughters, to be more vigilant in preventing unwanted pregnancies.
“Unwanted pregnancies go against Islamic principles. Parents need to supervise their children carefully to avoid such situations,” he concluded.
