The Oyo State government has filed 18 charges, including murder, against Naomi Silekunola, the former queen of the Ooni of Ife, and several others in connection with the deadly stampede at the Principal of Islamic High School in Bashorun, Ibadan, which resulted in the deaths of 35 children.
In a legal action registered as I/05C/2025, the Oyo State government, as the complainant, named Silekunola, Oriyomi Hamzat (the proprietor of an Ibadan-based radio station), Abdullahi Fasasi (the school’s principal), and others as defendants. The charges were officially filed on January 10, 2025.
The government accused the defendants of conspiracy to commit murder, manslaughter, and criminal negligence, actions punishable under Section 324 of the Criminal Code, CAP 38, Vol II, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
The tragic incident occurred on December 18, 2024, during an event at the school.
