The Plateau Environment Protection and Sanitation Agency (PEPSA), says Jos-Bukuru metropolis needs more faecal sludge sites for the hygienic disposal of faecal waste.
The Director – General of the Agency, Samuel Dapiya, said this on Tuesday in Jos, when a team from World Bank in charge of the Sustainable Urban Rural Water Supply Sanitation and Hygiene Programme (SURWASH), inspected the metropolis temporary faecal sludge site in Mista-Ali in Jos.
Dapiya, explained that faecal sludge is the slurry gotten from septic tanks (suck aways) that contained both solid and liquid human waste , which are usually drained periodically, when the septic tanks are full.
He said the Agency, acquiring more sludge sites would provide a permanent site for the effective and healthy disposal of faecal waste gotten from the evacuated septic tanks, which was imperative for the protection of human and environmental health.
According to him, the state owing the sludge site would ensure it complied to global best practices .

The D-G, lamented that the improper disposal of sludge and an inadequate management of faecal sludge,could lead to the contamination of the environment and nearby drinking water sources which could cause severe public health and environmental consequences leading to an increased risk of epidemics caused by the act.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the World Bank had approved a $700 million for SURWASH programme in seven states to increase access to water, sanitation, and hygiene services.
