The Embassy of Israel in collaboration with the Rotary Club of the American University of Nigeria (AUN) in Yola is organizing a Football League for the children in the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in Adamawa State.
About 225 kids out of over thousands of others in the IDP camps in the North East of the country are participating in the Football League which kicked off in Yola on Thursday, 26th of April, 2017 and will end on Thursday, 4th of May, 2017.
The initiative, a brain child of the Ambassador of Israel to Nigeria, Mr. Guy Feldman was put together to replace Israel’s National Day reception in Nigeria scheduled for next week.
According to Tony Obiechina, Senior Media & Political Officer at the Embassy, the efforts and funds will instead be channeled to drawing international attention to the plight of the kids in IDPs camps.
At the end of the tournament, which is expected to be witnessed by notable football legends like Kanu Nwankwo and Nollywood Stars, Desmond Elliot and Funke Akindele; all the kids will be issued with certificates of participation and also get full scholarships for one academic year.
Simultaneously the university will be running a competition between its students using video clip footages from the tournament.
The winning clip will be pushed through all Israeli embassies to major international media outlets to convey this message of hope to the international community.
