The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said it will continue to work with the media to strengthen democratic governance in the Nigeria.
INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakub u gave the assurance in Abuja on Thursday at the First Quarterly Consultative Meeting with Media for 2024 held at INEC Conference Room ahead of the off-cycle governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states respectively.
Professor Yakubu who said INEC’s management does not believe in censorship said the Commission would continue to remain open to guard against fake news just as he maintained that the Commission would continue to welcome reports, commentaries and analysis on elections to improve service delivery.
In his remark, the President of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Dr Chris Isiguzo charged INEC to work closely with stakeholders including the media for credible conduct of next governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States.
According to him, “It is by working together that we can uphold the sanctity of the ballot box and safeguard the nation”.
However, Dr Isiguzo commended INEC for providing the platform to dialogue and receive inputs of the Media to enhance transparency and effectiveness of the country’s electoral processes.
