A former Commissioner for Information and Communication in Rivers State, Austin Tam-George, has said efforts to remove Governor Siminalayi Fubara through impeachment would be difficult to sustain, citing what he described as the absence of clear allegations and the governor’s performance in office.
Tam-George stated this on Thursday while featuring on Prime Time on Arise Television, where he argued that the impeachment moves against Fubara were politically motivated and aimed at truncating his chances of securing a second term.
He said the governor’s focus on people-oriented policies had weakened the basis for any attempt to remove him from office, pointing to interventions in rural development, housing, education and healthcare across the state.
According to him, the visible impact of the administration’s programmes on residents has made it hard for opponents to convincingly justify the impeachment process currently being initiated.
The former commissioner also criticised what he described as the vague nature of the impeachment allegations, insisting that the purported articles lacked specific claims of wrongdoing against the governor or his deputy.
Tam-George further alleged that the impeachment plot was designed to destabilise the administration and prevent Fubara from building the political momentum needed to seek re-election.
He also urged the All Progressives Congress to wade into the matter, saying the party should not stand by while a sitting governor, whom he described as one of the best-performing in the country, was subjected to what he called political humiliation.
