An officer of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) stationed in Lagos has tragically collapsed and died under unclear circumstances.
According to PUNCH Metro, a video circulating online on Monday shows the officer, who was not in uniform, collapsing and dying in an undisclosed location in Lagos on Sunday.
In the video, the officer’s lifeless body is surrounded by onlookers, including police officers, who proceeded to search through his bag. It was during this search that the officer’s EFCC identity card was found, confirming his affiliation with the agency.
EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the officer’s death in a phone conversation with our correspondent on Monday.
He stated that the agency has launched an investigation into the incident. “Yes, the man was our officer. His death is under investigation. The incident occurred on Sunday,” Oyewale said.
This comes after the January 15 report of an EFCC officer, Assistant Superintendent Aminu Salisu, who was shot by a suspected internet fraudster, Joshua Ikechukwu, during a raid in Onitsha, Anambra State.
The EFCC operatives, who had traveled from the agency’s zonal headquarters in Enugu, were ambushed while attempting to apprehend a group of suspected cybercriminals.
Oyewale condemned negative narratives surrounding the officer’s death and emphasized that the EFCC is committed to ensuring justice is served.
