President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has reportedly resigned from his position alongside other members of the federation’s Executive Committee, Prompt News Online reports.
The resignations come amid mounting pressure on the NFF leadership following a series of disappointing performances by Nigeria’s national teams on the international stage.
The development comes barely a month before the NFF elective congress, which had been scheduled to take place on September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
However, the National Sports Commission (NSC) has reportedly moved to suspend the electoral process, with consideration being given to the establishment of a normalisation committee to oversee the affairs of Nigerian football and create the framework for fresh elections.
Pressure on Gusau and members of his executive committee had intensified in recent months following a string of poor results involving the country’s senior and youth national teams.
One of the biggest setbacks under the administration was the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The failure meant Nigeria missed football’s biggest global tournament for a second consecutive edition, despite Africa being allocated additional qualification slots for the expanded competition.
The crisis deepened further after the Super Falcons failed to secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Nigeria, who had featured at every edition of the Women’s World Cup since the inaugural tournament in 1991, saw that proud record come to an end following a 2-1 defeat to South Africa in the African play-off in Morocco.
The Super Falcons had earlier been eliminated from the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations at the quarter-final stage following a defeat to Cameroon, a result which forced them into the play-off route in their bid to secure a place at the World Cup.
