Mr Benson Abounu, the Deputy Governor of Benue, has expressed regret over the snatching of election materials meant for Idabi polling unit in Okete Ward in Otukpo by gunmen.
Abounu told Journalists on Saturday in Otukpo that the gunmen attacked a tricycle conveying the materials to the polling unit and commandeered them to unknown destination.
He, however, said that the perpetrators were “known names” and the matter had already been reported to the police.
He regretted the inability of the Area Police Command to act swiftly when the matter was reported to them.
Abounu said a police officer in the Area Command, whom the matter was reported to did not act swiftly until the former Senate President, Sen. David Mark, intervened.
”He did not act until the former Senate President, Sen. David Mark spoke to the Area Commander that was when both of them came to the area and this was around 2p.m. and the incident occurred at 8:30a.m.,” he said.
He said the polling unit which materials were snatched, had 917 registered voters and regretted that all of them were disenfranchised as a result of the act.
He also lamented that the voting process was “terribly slow” thereby keeping the electorate waiting longer than necessary.
