Five miners have been killed and two others injured after suspected gunmen attacked a mining site in Marit village, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident occurred on Saturday while the victims were reportedly carrying out mining activities at the site.
The attackers were said to have opened fire on the miners, killing five people and leaving two others with injuries.
The attack has renewed concerns over the safety of residents and workers operating in parts of the state, particularly those involved in mining activities.
Confirming the incident, the spokesman for the Berom Youth Moulders-Association, Rwang Tengwong, said five people were killed while two others sustained injuries.
Tengwong described the attack as painful, saying the community was once again grieving over the loss of lives to violence.
He condemned the incident and called on security agencies to intensify efforts to protect residents and workers in the affected communities.
The latest attack came days after another mining-related incident in Plateau State, where four suspected illegal miners reportedly died following the collapse of a sand excavation pit in Tangur community, Bokkos Local Government Area.
The two incidents occurred under different circumstances but have drawn renewed attention to the dangers confronting people involved in mining and other mineral-related activities across the state.
