Dr. Cornelius Onuigbo, a urologist in the Department of Surgery at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital in Nnewi, Anambra State, was abducted by gunmen on Tuesday evening.
The incident occurred at the entrance of Onuigbo’s residence in Nnewi as he was returning home from work.
Witnesses reported that armed men intercepted the doctor, forced him into their vehicle, and drove off.
One witness said, “The armed men surrounded the doctor just as he was about to enter his residence. After a brief conversation, they ordered him into their vehicle and drove off. We don’t know the reason behind the abduction, and the kidnappers have yet to contact the family, though they are already working on securing his release.”
A university staff member, who preferred to remain anonymous, confirmed the incident, stating, “The institution is aware of what happened, and we are taking the necessary steps. That’s all I can share for now.”
Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, also confirmed the abduction.
“Yes, the command is aware of the kidnapping. We have already mobilized resources for the doctor’s rescue. The Commissioner of Police, CP Obono Itam, has issued directives, and our officers are actively working on the case,” he said.
