After a student gunman killed one person at Germany’s Heidelberg University on Monday, police are still trying to ascertain the motive for the attack.
Three others were injured in the shooting before the killer turned the gun on himself.
A police spokesperson said on Tuesday that they were talking to relatives of the young man.
The perpetrator had sent a WhatsApp message to his father shortly before the crime.
According to police, the student wrote and said “people have to be punished now.’’
“The victim’s parents are in great distress, but so are those of the perpetrator,’’ the spokesperson said.
The question of how the biology student got hold of the two weapons, one of which he used for the shooting, was still unanswered.
The 18-year-old was said to have bought the noguns abroad a few days ago but did not possess a weapons licence.
According to initial investigations, the German student, who lived in the nearby city of Mannheim, was first shot several times in a lecture hall with about 30 students inside, and later killed himself in front of the building.
The suspect still had more than 100 rounds of ammunition on him.
A 19- and a 20-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man were slightly injured by gunfire.
A 23-year-old female student died on Monday afternoon after being shot in the head.
In the immediate aftermath of the attack, police said there did not appear to be a political or religious motive. (dpa/NAN)
