Gov. Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom has urged the Federal Government to implement more projects in the state in order to enhance the wellbeing of the people.

Eno made appeal in Uyo on Wednesday when members of the House of Representatives Committees on Environment and Host Communities visited him.

Represented by his deputy, Sen. Akon Eyakenyi, Eno said that his administration would continue to implement environment-friendly  projects.

”One of our problems in the state is gully erosion, we urge the Federal Government to support us in this area.

”As a government, we are committed to making the environment better and friendly for our people to live in,” he said.

The governor expressed concerns at the state of federal roads in the state and urged the Federal Government to intervene in the interest of the citizenry.

He said that Akwa Ibom was a leading oil producing state, adding that it deserved visible presence of Federal Government projects.

Earlier, Mr Julius Pondi, the Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Environment, said that members of the two committees were in the state for a retreat.

He said that during the event, the committees would critically look at the environmental challenges confronting the nation.

”We are here to look at the issue of divestment in the oil and gas industry, we shall also look at the environmental impact on host communities.

“I am glad that the organisers of this retreat chose Akwa Ibom because this state is a critical stakeholder in the oil sector.

“We shall look at very burning issue concerning host communities in the Niger Delta as contained in the Petroleum Industry Act,” he said.

In his speech, the Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Host Communities, Mr Dumnamene Dekor, described the retreat as ‘very sensitive and crucial’

”We shall use the retreat to fashion out specific legislative interventions that will address grey areas in the Petroleum Industry Act,” he said. (NAN)
