The Gombe State government has introduced a mandatory monthly sanitation as part of efforts to ensure sustainable and clean environment for healthy living.
The introduction of the monthly exercise is coming following approval by the state governor, Inuwa Yahaya, that the last Saturday of every month be observed as General Environmental Sanitation Day, starting from April.
The approval was conveyed in a memo signed by the Commissioner of Water, Environment and Forest Resources, Mr Mohammed Fawu, issued to newsmen on Tuesday in Gombe.
Fawu said the exercise would be conducted between 8.00 a.m. and 10.00 a.m. during which movement would be restricted except for persons on essential services.
“In line with this administration’s resolve to ensure provision of sustainable and healthy environment for human habitation, Gov. Yahaya has approved the conduct of monthly general environmental sanitation exercise in the state.
“This is to be observed by the general public every last Saturday of the month. The exercise is to be conducted from 8.00 a.m. and 10.00 a.m.
“Based on the above, there will be restriction of movements during the period (except those on essential services).
“Also, all MDAs and the general public are hereby directed to comply strictly with the directive,” he said.
The Commissioner said a team of officials from the Ministry of Water, Environment and Forest Resources as well as the Gombe State Environmental Sanitation and Protection Agency (GOSEPA) would monitor the exercise to ensure strict compliance with the directive.
