In furtherance of its commitment to supporting the National Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) towards the success of the 2019 general elections, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Thursday organised a one day capacity building program for FRSC staff participating in the election duties at the Public Service Institute, Abuja.
Speaking while declaring the program open, the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi expressed the readiness of the Corps to playing its roles of supporting INEC for a free, credible and peaceful elections most diligently.
According to a statement issued by the FRSC Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, he disclosed that the theme of the Capacity Development program was, “2019 Elections: FRSC Roles and responsibilities,” where the Corps Marshal, spoke on the need for the staff of FRSC who have been deployed to participate in the election duties to carryout the assignment with the highest sense of responsibility, diligence and neutrality expected of a non partisan organisation.
He recalled the FRSC’s past participation in election duties, noting that in all the past assignments the Corps in support of INEC, the Corps was not found wanting and nothing less is expected this time around. “He particularly warned the FRSC personnel participating in the election duties against any act that could undermine the well known integrity of the Corps,” the statement said.
The statement added that while congratulating the INEC Chairman, Professor Manhood Yakubu for putting necessary measures in place for the delivery of a credible, free and fair 2019 elections, the Corps Marshal gave assurances that FRSC on its part and in fulfilment of its commitment to always support INEC has been engaging in various capacity development programmes for staff participating in the election duties. He noted that the capacity development program is being held across the country, while tow trucks and ambulances are being deployed to relevant locations across the country to keep the roads free of obstructions and respond promptly to distress and emergency calls during the elections.
“Furthermore, the Corps Marshal stated that all the drivers and vehicles that would be involved in the conveyance of the election materials are being screened and certified by members of the Corps to make the operations hitch free,” he stated.
The Corps Marshal enumerated the roles that FRSC is expected to play during the elections as requested by INEC, urging staff to demonstrate the highest level of commitment in carrying them out and work closely with relevant security agencies to ensure that the exercise is devoid of any safety and security challenges.
Earlier in his remarks, the Administrator of the Public Service Institute Abuja, Abdul Ganiyu Obatoyibo who accompanied the Corps Marshal to the opening ceremony commended the FRSC and its leadership for upholding the highest virtues of public service characterised by integrity, productivity and diligence all of which are the hallmarks of the FRSC. He particularly thanked the Corps Marshal for choosing the institute as the venue for the very important program, promising to continue to support the Corps in its future capacity development programmes by making the facilities of the institute available to the Corps.
Different papers on Risks and threat analysis, Security analysis during elections and Roles and Responsibilities of FRSC in the 2019 elections were presented by the representatives of the Commissioner of Police, FCT; Director State Security Services, FCT and FRSC Sector Commander, FCT respectively.
Among those in attendance at the program were some principal officers of the FRSC National Headquarters including the Deputy Corps Marshal in charge of Operations, Special Assistant to the Corps Marshal and FRSC participants in the election duties with attendance from the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and Nigerian Prisons Service among others.
