The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun, says it is set to commence a special operation to arrest and prosecute motorists who disobey traffic rules and regulations in the state.
The FRSC Sector Commander in the state, Mr Ahmed Umar, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abeokuta on Wednesday.
Umar said the operation had become necessary in order to end the menace road traffic offences such as traffic lights disobedience, route violation among other infractions capable of jeopardising the safety and security of the residents.
The FRSC boss said that the command would collaborate with the state-owned Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) in order to jointly end the menace.
He said that the two agencies had embarked on sensitisation and would follow it up with strict enforcement against any individual or motorists who violate traffic rules and regulations across the state.
“The Deputies Corps Commanders of Operations from the two agencies had met where they planned and strategised on effective synergy to curtail the menace.
“The non-challant attitude of motorists has been a concern to us. It is important for them to respect other road users to avoid unnecessary road crashes.
“The sanctions will include, but not limited to arrest and possible prosecution either through direct mobile court or fines according to the laws,”he said.
Umar enjoined road users to ensure strict adherence to traffic rules and regulations not just within the metropolis, but also on the highways.
He said that defaulters shall be apprehended and prosecuted according the extant laws. (NAN)
