Portugal head coach Roberto Martínez expects a tough challenge when his side faces Nigeria’s Super Eagles in an international friendly on Wednesday night, Prompt News Online reports.
The Seleção das Quinas will welcome the three-time African champions to the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria as part of their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The match holds added significance for Portugal, who are scheduled to meet another African nation, the Democratic Republic of Congo, during the group stage of the tournament.
Martínez praised the Super Eagles as a strong and tactically flexible side, noting that the fixture will serve as an important test for his team ahead of the World Cup.
The former Belgium coach believes Éric Chelle’s men possess the quality, intensity, and adaptability needed to provide Portugal with valuable preparation as they fine-tune their plans for the global showpiece.
“Against Nigeria, we have an opportunity to work on aspects that are similar to the strengths that Congo also has. It’s a different African team, with a lot of tactical flexibility. It’s a demanding opponent, it’s another test to prepare our group,” Martinez was quoted by Portuguese website ojogo.
