Four northern governors elected under the platform of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday, conferred with former Vice President Alex Ekwueme in Abuja.
The meeting, which was confirmed by the Special Assistant to Kano state Governor, Baba Dantiye, was attended by Governors Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano, Muritala Nyako-Adamawa, Sule Lamido- Jigawa and Magartakada Wamakko of Sokoto.
Dantiye said Governor Babangida Aliyu ought to attend the meeting but has left the country to perform Lesser Hajj (Umrah) in Saudi Arabia. He however declined to give details, saying it was not meant for media coverage.
Prompt News Online recalls that the five governors had earlier met with former President Olusegun Obasanjo at his Hill Top residence in Abeokuta, a couple of weeks ago.
The Governors, who obviously are not happy with the happenings in their party, had conferred with former Military President Ibrahim Babangida in Minna and later former President Shehu Shagari in Sokoto.
They had scheduled to consult with former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, but he was said to be out of the country. It is not clear if they will still meet with him when he returns. Last week Saturday, the Governors also met with President Jonathan at the instance of the latter.
It will be recalled that Governors Aliyu, Lamido, Kwakwanso, Nyako and Wamakko had admitted shortly after the controversial Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) election that returned Governor Rotimi Amaechi as chairman, that they voted for him against the directives of the party.
The ruling party and the President had picked Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau as successor to Governor Amaechi, owing to the latter’s perceived Vice Presidential ambition, which the party believe could affect the chances of President Goodluck Jonathan should he decides to run in 2015.
