As President Muhammadu Buhari arrives Plateau for a two-day working visit, the Federation Of Muslim Women Association of Nigeria (FOMWAN), has urged him to initiate a special scheme to assist indigent women to start-up their businesses.
Mrs. Mairo Sani, FOMWAN leader in Plateau, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Jos, that women in Plateau deserved special attention because they were among the most hardworking in the country.
“The state has been crises-ridden for years with many getting killed leaving their wives and children behind.
“Such widows have been abandoned by society and are on their own. The President should assist these helpless women to be self-reliant,” she said.
She urged the President to facilitate access to micro-credit facilities for the widows to boost their earnings.
Sani said that the visit was particularly significant for women because it coincided with this year’s annual International Women’s Day whose objective was to facilitate the economic empowerment of women and promote gender equity.
The FOMWAN leader commended the Plateau government for engaging women in peace building processes, saying that the gesture would foster unity and peace for development.
NAN reports that Buhari, who is visiting the state for the first time since he became President in 2015, is expected to inaugurate some road projects and launch the Plateau tractor ownership scheme.
The President is also expected to parley with Plateau stakeholders at a town hall meeting on Friday, March 9.
