Flutterwave, one of Nigeria’s leading fintech firms, has obtained regulatory approval from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to operate as a full-fledged bank, a move set to expand the company’s footprint beyond its core payment services.
The development comes as the Lagos-based platform revealed that it has processed over $40 billion in transactions since its inception in 2016, underscoring the rapid adoption of digital payments across Africa and globally.
The banking licence positions Flutterwave to offer a wider range of financial services, signalling a growing trend in Nigeria’s fintech sector where major players are moving closer to becoming comprehensive financial service providers.
In a parallel development, the CBN recently invited Flutterwave and other fintech firms, including Paystack, to participate in a pilot programme aimed at supervising virtual-asset activities. The initiative is part of the central bank’s efforts to tighten oversight of digital finance, ensuring compliance with anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing standards as Nigeria’s digital economy matures.
Since its launch a decade ago, Flutterwave has steadily expanded across African markets, enabling businesses to receive payments from customers worldwide. The milestone of processing $40 billion in payments reflects the firm’s growing influence on the continent’s financial infrastructure.
Industry analysts say Flutterwave’s dual achievements—a banking licence and inclusion in the CBN’s virtual-asset pilot—highlight the company’s evolution from a simple cross-border payment gateway into a key player in Africa’s fintech ecosystem.
Experts note that the regulatory recognition could accelerate innovation in Nigeria’s digital finance landscape, encouraging other fintech firms to explore broader financial services while remaining under stricter oversight.
