The Bronze medal-winning Flamingos on Tuesday arrived in Abuja amidst fanfare as the management of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport rolled out the red carpet for the heroines.
The Ethiopian Airline carrying the Nigerian delegation touched down in Abuja at exactly 12.16 pm and after completing airport formalities, emerged to a warm welcome by the management of the airport in the presence of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) hierarchy and representative of Minister of Sports Chief Sunday Dare.
As earlier reported by Prompt News Online, NFF Executive Committee member, Chief Felix Anyansi-Agwu and the General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi were on ground to receive the team.
Others at the airport to welcome the Flamingos are NFF Head of International Competitions, Dayo Enebi Achor; Director of Communications, Ademola Olajire and Head of Protocol Unit, Barnabas Joro as well as Toyin Ibitoye, an aide to the Minister of Sports.
Meanwhile, Super Eagles Captain, Ahmed Musa has redeemed the pledge of three million naira (N3m) made last week after the Flamingos scooped Bronze medal in the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final in India.
Musa was represented at the airport reception by an aide who handed the cash to the team to the loud applauds of the players and officials.
The players, coaching crew, backroom staff and a handful of NFF staff left Mumbai yesterday and flew straight to Addis Ababa where they were on transit for few hours before connecting their flight to Abuja.
The Coach Olowookere Bankole tutored Flamingos did the impossibility in the just concluded FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final in India where they scooped Bronze after edging Germany 3-2 in penalty shoot-out.
The team has joined the Black Maidens of Ghana to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in 2012.
