Nigerian Government has stated that it has no intention of reviving the failed Nigeria Air project in collaboration with Ethiopian Airlines (ET).
This clarification comes in response to remarks made by Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, during a recent handover ceremony in Abuja. Kana had referenced the revival of the national carrier project, prompting inquiries about the future of Nigeria Air.
Kana initially said: “My deployment to the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development is quite timely. Upon receiving my deployment letter, I was given two clear instructions: to ensure the national carrier becomes a reality and to sanitize airports nationwide.”
However, Kana issued a statement yesterday to clarify his comments, saying, “Since my inaugural statement on Monday at the handover ceremony, I have received numerous inquiries about my reference to reviving the national carrier project. To avoid any confusion, I want to make it clear that I did not mention any mandate to revive the failed Nigeria Air deal with Ethiopian Airlines. I received no such directive.”
He continued, “I was merely referring to the broader vision of the administration to consider a national carrier project if it is deemed beneficial for the country, in line with the guidance of Mr. President and the Minister of Aviation.”
Kana also expressed his loyalty to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, pledging to work together to advance the ministry’s goals. He emphasized their shared commitment to ensuring the future of Nigeria’s aviation sector is innovative and aligned with national aspirations.
The Nigeria Air project, initiated by former Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika, was suspended due to corruption allegations. In August 2024, Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa ordered that the government’s plans to establish a national carrier be halted.
