The Federal government has condemned the kidnapping of passengers at Tom Ikimi Train Station in Igueben, Edo State, describing it as despicable and utterly barbaric.
Unknown gunmen were reported to have attacked passengers waiting to board a train from Igueben in Igueben Local Government Area of Edo State to Warri in Delta State on Saturday.
It was also reported that the Minister of Transportation, Alhaji Mu’azu Jaji Sambo had stormed to the Edo State station of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) shortly after the incident on a fact finding mission.
A statement by the Ministry on Sunday
said “the Government is saddened by this unpleasant development and assures on its prompt response to the ugly situation”.
The statement which issued by the Ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Henshaw Ogubuike said:
“The Public is hereby reassured that the security Agencies are making efforts to rescue the kidnapped Train passengers. The Nigerian Police is on the trail of the criminals and have mobilised with a view to protecting the lives and property of the remaining passengers.
“The Government is saddened by this unpleasant development and assures on its prompt response to the ugly situation. “Further details will be communicated later”.
