Dr Festus Iyayi, former President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Tuesday died in a car crash.
He was said to be on his way to Kano to attend the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of ASUU billed for Wednesday.
The NEC meeting was called to take crucial decision on the nationwide strike which has been ongoing for over four months now.
Dr. Iyayi, who became ASUU President 1986, was on the team that negotiated with President Goodluck Jonathan at the State House recently.
President Jonathan was said to have made fresh offer to ASUU team led by its President Dr Nasir Isa Fagge to end the strike during the marathon meeting that lasted for 13 hours.
