Enugu metropolis and some parts of Enugu State, on Friday, recorded the first rain of the year even as residents feel relieved from increasing heat.

The  rain, which started about 6:30p.m. in some parts of the metropolis and hinterland of the state, lasted for more than 35 minutes.

The rain took many, especially traders, unaware as they thought it was just a mere cloudy sky before they quickly salvage their wares and goods displayed in the open.

Residents of Abakpa, Nowas, Trans Ekulu, Ogbete, Agbani Road and Independent Layout experienced the shower that disrupted night-life and night-market sales in these areas.

In the hinterland, the rain fell in some parts of Udi council area, Ezeagu council area and Enugu East council area as well as Emene community, Agbani community and 9th Mile Corner near Enugu metropolis.

Reacting, Mr Livinus Okoro, a resident of Achara Layout along Agbani Road, noted that the rain was a great blessing and relieve as it had cooled the hot temperature.

“It is a great blessing for one to witness the firs rain of the year as well as its cooling effect on the atmosphere,’’ Okoro said.

A dealer in grains in Ogbete, Chidi Nweke, said that the rain that touched most parts of the state would lead to early farming this year especially “if we have it consecutively within the coming days’’.

“This is one of the acts of God that hold a lot of benefits for man, especially in food production.

“I pray it will continue to rain and lead us to bumper harvest this year to force the prices of grain down and improve the grain selling business,’’ Nweke said.

A resident of Uwani, Pastor Jude Onyekwere, said that God had given the residents of Enugu relieve from the harsh weather and heat that had been on the increase for over a week now.
