Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Gbenga Elegbeleye has showered encomiums on Team Nigeria that emerged the 2013 Africa Junior Athletics Champions in Mauritius on Sunday.
Nigeria emerged overall winner having won nine gold, seven silver and three bronze medals at the Championship that was rounded off in Mauritius on Sunday.
“The National Sports Commission is elated and excited about the feat of our junior athletes that emerged the overall winner and Champions of the 2013 Africa Junior Athletics Championship that was rounded off in Mauritius.”
“This is the beginning of many good things to come as regards Nigerian sports. I congratulate the athletes and officials that have done us proud in the Mauritius Championship. With this feat, the athletes have opened way for Nigeria to do well in next year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and also at the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil” the former Legislator assured.
Meanwhile, Elegbeleye also charged the Super Eagles to follow the victorious way of the Nigerian junior athletes by spanking the visiting Flames of Malawi in Calabar on Saturday to qualify for the final round of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.
“I want our darling Super Eagles to emulate these athletes by also beating the Malawi National team in Calabar on Saturday and qualify for the last stage of the ongoing 2014 World Cup qualifying series” Elegbeleye said.
