The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed the arrest of social media personality Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, citing serious allegations of financial misconduct.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the EFCC explained that Otse was invited for questioning over multiple petitions involving alleged financial crimes.
The agency said he repeatedly ignored several invitations sent through official channels.
“He refused to show up in spite of several invitations sent to him,” the EFCC noted.
The Commission emphasized that the arrest was lawful and based solely on the allegations under investigation.
It also addressed concerns raised on social media, urging the public to allow due process to take its course.
“We urge Nigerians to refrain from speculation and allow the EFCC to carry out its constitutional responsibilities without fear or favour,” the statement read.
The EFCC further stated that Otse’s previous public criticisms of the agency were not the reason for his arrest.
“While such conduct is condemnable, his arrest was not informed by those actions.
The appropriate authorities will handle those separately,” the Commission added.
According to the EFCC, a valid remand order was obtained to detain Otse while investigations continue.
The agency also disclosed that he has been granted administrative bail and will be released once he meets the stipulated conditions.
