The All Progressives Congress (APC) Committee of Diaspora Chairmen says the emergence of President Bola Tinubu as the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States(ECOWAS) is a testimony of trust reposed in him by his counterparts.
The committee in a statement on Tuesday signed by Prof. Adesegun Labinjo and Mr Bola Babarinde, its Chairman and General Secretary respectively, also commended Tinubu’s vision for good governance.
Tinubu took over from President Umaro Sissoco Embalo Guinea-Bissau on Sunday, during the 63rd Ordinary Session of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS in Bissau.
The committee noted that the election of Tinubu as ECOWAS Chairman in less than two months as the President of Nigeria, shows the level of trust and confidence reposed in him by the leaders of the regional organisation.
It said with this new position, Tinubu is now in a much more better position to contribute positively to African Union as a leader of a regional bloc of West African States comprising of more than 17 countries.
“The APC Committee of Diaspora Chairmen hereby congratulate the President Bola Tinubu, the entire government of Nigeria, Nigerians and people of West Africa on the emergence of Nigeria’s new Head of State as the leader of the West African body.
“As President Tinubu will be visiting some African countries and have confirmed appointment to visit South Africa by invitation of President Cyril Ramaphosa to attend BRICS summit at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg from August 22 to August 24.
“He will not be attending for Nigeria alone but as the head of West African Nations, which will be a boost to BRICS thereby bringing the political and economical wherewithal of a regional bloc and it’s leverage.
“We look forward expectantly to the fruitful deliberations and deliverables of these international engagements to the economic development and political advancement of Nigeria, West Africa and the African Continent as a whole”, the committee said. (NAN)
