The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed the killing of six soldiers during an attack by the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists on a military base in Borno State.
In a statement released yesterday, the DHQ stated that, despite the loss of six soldiers, a significant number of terrorists were neutralized in the operation. The statement reported that 34 ISWAP fighters were killed, and 23 AK-47 rifles were recovered, along with over 200 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.
The attack occurred on January 4, 2025, when a group of ISWAP/Boko Haram militants on motorcycles and gun trucks ambushed troops stationed at Sabon Gari village, located in Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State. The terrorists sought to surprise the troops and retaliate against recent military successes, including the death of their commander and several fighters.
However, the terrorists were caught off guard as a returning patrol of troops foiled the attack. Additional reinforcements, including elements of the Civilian Joint Task Force and vigilantes, arrived on time to overpower the attackers. Despite encountering an improvised explosive device (IED) that injured the Vigilante Commander, the reinforcements helped neutralize the remaining terrorists.
The DHQ highlighted that the air component of Operation HADIN KAI provided critical support, conducting airstrikes on fleeing militants. The battle damage assessment confirmed the deaths of several terrorists and the recovery of weapons.
Although the identities of the fallen soldiers have not been disclosed to allow for the completion of the next of kin notification process, the military reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to eradicating terrorism and insurgency from Nigeria.
Since 2009, northern Nigeria has suffered from the ongoing insurgency led by Boko Haram and its splinter group, ISWAP, which has resulted in over 40,000 deaths and displaced nearly two million people.
