Obukoadata Aghoghofia, the councillor representing Evwreni Ward 8 in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, has died after collapsing during a football game in his community.
His sudden death comes less than two months after another councillor in the same local government area, Friday Ohwoevworuemu of Uwheru Ward 16, passed away following a brief illness on April 23, 2025.
Reacting to the tragedy, Ughelli North LGA Chairman Jaro Egbo expressed shock and grief.
In a Facebook post, he recounted spending time with Aghoghofia just hours before his death.
“I am not one given to emotional fits, but your sudden departure just three hours after we sat in my office, shared laughter and joked together, is a tragedy too painful to bear,” he wrote.
He described Aghoghofia as a dedicated legislator who made significant contributions to his ward and the 8th Assembly. “His sudden departure is a heavy blow to us all.

On behalf of the government and the good people of Ughelli North, I mourn the loss of a brother, a friend, and an exceptional politician,” Egbo added.
Sources in Ughelli confirmed on Tuesday that Aghoghofia’s passing marks the third death of a serving councillor in Delta State within the past nine months—two from Ughelli North and one from Emede Ward 5 in Isoko South Local Government Area.
